Story behind the song
The song wrote itself. Started with the idea of a Tattoo - a permanent mark - something that remains. Tattoo on My Heart is a strong image. I'd been in the south, travelling around, and came in contact with this guy Bobby who couldn't get over his lost lover... 3 years later... the songs's about Bobby... but most of it is made up. He did have a Harley.
Lyrics
Tattoo on My Heart You finally crawled out from under my skin Now there’s nothing much left inside I’m kind of wobbly, but finding my feet From that wild motorcycle ride There’s a little town, Doloroso Mississippi It’s nowhere; it’s just somewhere to start Waiting at the station, licking my wounds With a tattoo on my heart I really was believing in our life on the road Leather jackets, warm wind in our hair Rolling down highways, heading down south Working cafes and state county fairs I thought your sweet love would hold me forever It was oh so gentle at the start Now you’re gone and there’s nothing left Just a tattoo on my heart Tattoo on my heart Tattoo on my heart The scar you left inside of me Is tearing me apart No matter where I turn The ways of love are hard to chart Someday, somebody’s bound to see The tattoo my heart It’s snowing up north I heard on the news On the Gulf it’s warm in the sun I just don’t know which way to turn I’m so tired of this life on the run A greyhound’ s leaving every hour on the hour I need to find my missing part You really left a mark on me The tattoo on m heart
