Story behind the song
for me & kim, the saying "High20" is a metaphor for confidence, among other things...
I had created a new 'lil riff & i showed kim. She liked it right away & shared with me a desire to write a song of how surfing relates to relationships/life.
She had already written a freakly deep analogy in her journal, so she had some, well, inspiring words to bank off of already..i hit the first chord, & she says whoa, wait...hit that 1st chord when you hear the word "love" ..from there the words jus' flowed, and then a chorus was born, a small bridge, and that was that. it was cool teaming up with kim & writing a song.
if you thik about it, life and all the relationships you in encounter along the way in life, can really be related to surfing..from friendships-to love-life-to work place-to school-->somethings, some waves, are gonna just be so unreal & some are just gonna trash the hell outta you...take this job i'm in right now for ex. man, its a peice of cake job, but somehow/for some reason i keep f'in up...jus small kine stuff, but, shoots that stuff adds up..any way..every freakin work day i feel caught up in the white wash @ makapu'u, or i feel like the day i ate it @ sandy's and lost my shorts (with a beach full of people watching)...man..i'm starting to see how life can so easily become an uphill battle--seeming like you're always strugglin against the flow...but its times like this when i begin to see & realize all these obstacles in my way that i remember, shit, i can just duck dive this...& so can you...
but for real, if you surf, think of how much it (can) teach bout life.
