Arizona's Most Wanted..
C-H-A-L-Y-L
The streets aint ready!
BIOGRAPHY
At just seventeen years of age, C.H.A.L.Y.L was born William Barnard in Los Angeles
in 1986, the same year one of his greatest influences, Rakim, dropped his first
single. With additional influences ranging from the West Coast gangsta of DJ
Quick to New York’s Notorious B.I.G. and the wordplay of fellow teen prodigy Big
L, coupled with a childhood spent in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Las Vegas,
NyCe has developed a unique style beyond his age and location.
From mid-90s grade school rhymes (“I'm short, but I can ball and sing/But it's
time for us to stop because the bell gone ring”) to his current collection of songs,
C.H.A.L.Y.L has stepped his lyrical content up, and in many cases has surpassed MCs
ten years his senior. “I might be young, but trust me I've been through the same
drama and pain that the next man has been through,” says C.H.A.L.Y.L. It’s precisely
that experience that has shaped the life, and consequently the music, of this
young performer. “Because I've lived in a lot of places and been to a lot of cities
and states I have a mixture of music inside of me. I can flip my style from east
coast, to the west, I can give you the south, I can give you the crunk, the real, the
pain, the hype.”
C.H.A.L.Y.L’s current collection of songs illustrates that point. “N.F.L. (N**** For Life)”
uses the regal horns of the Fox Sports theme to introduce “the future” to the
world. “Bang Bang,” with its Nancy Sinatra sample and dark lyrics is east coast
grimey, and “Be With Me” is the flipside; smoothed out lyrics for the ladies over a
west coast track. C.H.A.L.Y.L spits street game over the southern-sounding bounce of
“Tha Block” and “Ya’ll N****s Ain’t No Gangsta.”
“My music is me applying for a job,” explains C.H.A.L.Y.L. “I'm giving you my
background, my life, the way I see the world, the way I learned from my
mistakes, the girls, the parties, the block, the struggle, everything about me. Any
interview question, anything you would ever want to know about me, you will find
out in my music.”
