Story behind the song
Inspired by reading too much Nietsche, Emerson, Hemmingway, and by a childhood memory of mine, listening to a news story about a teenage suicide in West Texas. I didn't understand then, regretfully, I do now. Meant to be enlightening, not depressing. The state of America, the planet and its people is something we all have had a hand in creating, whether knowingly or not. The future is in our hands as well. I use the word play in the name of a small town in West Texas, as a slice of America: (part of the chorus)"If Wichita Falls, it falls for thee." We're all part of the problem, we can all be a part of the answer.
Lyrics
Wichita Falls Copyright © by Rick Yost I think I just met Zarathustra The boy looked dead on his feet I gave him all my spare change And he staggered on down the street Spoke of the mother of invention Is a bitch that won’t let go Bang until your back is gone But she still wants more Do you still believe In the law of gravity? Let things fall together We’ll see what we shall see And all the hellhounds of the wasteland Are breathin’ hot down on your heel No need to ask for whom Wichita Falls Wichita Falls for thee Wichita Falls for thee Wichita Falls I just had lunch with Great Caesars’ Ghost Man that was cool He said listen up Jack you better watch your back ‘cause they’ll stab you with the truth And the Brothers Grimm were all a grin They’d seen how this play ends In the last act its just a fact Jack The spinnin’ wheel spins Do you still believe In the law of gravity? Let things fall together We’ll see what we shall see And all the hellhounds of the wasteland Are breathin’ hot down on your heel No need to ask for whom Wichita Falls Wichita Falls for thee Wichita Falls for thee Wichita Falls You’re sick and tired of being sick and tired But its all you know So you jump face first off a West Texas tower And gravity brings you home I think I just past Zarathustra He was hurrying down the street His bags were packed, he aint coming back He said, “This aint no place for me.” Do you still believe In the law of gravity? Let things fall together We’ll see what we shall see And all the hellhounds of the wasteland Are rippin’ flesh off of your heel No need to ask for whom Wichita Falls Wichita Falls for thee Wichita Falls for thee Wichita Falls
