Lyrics
A red-tipped cane clicked along its way to the steps of St. Michael’s church
Shrouded eyes trying to catch the rays of warmth from the midday sun
I felt a sense of familiarity as a smile crossed his face
As if despite his blindness, man, he’d been there all along
I sat across the street from him and I watched as he slowly sat down
His hand outstretched slowly tracing the granite stone cool and gray
I felt a surge of curiosity as that smile crossed his face
I crossed the street and I asked the man to tell his tale to me
He said, “I’ve been blind most all my life. Well before Tet in ’68.
I ran these walls with John and Joey Tanner.
With sticks for guns we stormed these walls and proudly hung our flags.
And this old church reminds me of some brighter, lighter days.”
He slowly raised that red-tipped cane and traced the cornerstone
He tapped it twice and said, “Right here… describes my life.”
He said, “I let love be my cornerstone. I let my faith help me to see.
My eyes could only show me what my heart’s already seen.”
He said, “Let love be your cornerstone. Let your faith help you to see.
Cause darkness ain’t a commodity unique to just the blind….
It’s in us all…. It’s in us all.”
