Story behind the song
The song is for my grandfather, Pte. Walter Jones 9th King's Liverpool Regiment, Western Front 1915-1918. Fought in every major battle on the Western Front and never complained about a thing. Valleys are a theme going back going back 5 generations of Joneses: Wales, Everton, Schuylkill, Thames.
Lyrics
Years from the Valley Days when the rain came down, half a world from what we came to know. Years from the valley, the weekend morning crawls out of the snow. The road you chose to take would not be taken by my generation. Under the flags you made, caught in the teeth of a bitter east wind. We take it easy oh so easy. You’d laugh to see my face taking in the place that you called home. Hills fade behind you and then you’re gone, so keep your head down - so long.
