Story behind the song
When I was 17, I sat down to put to music to a poem my mother used to tell me every night at bedtime. As soon as I had finished with the music to the poem, the words to this song came spilling out of me and on to paper. It is dedicated to my mother who was and is a great influence in my music.
Lyrics
Underneath a starry sky Softly humming a lullaby It’s something that I heard A long time ago It came from a woman's lips And I remember her sweet soft kiss On my forehead Telling me goodnight CHORUS Mother I’m on this road It’s been a long long time Don’t know when I’ll be back And I remember your rhyme ---------------------------------------- Suddenly here comes the dawn And I wake up in a barn Lying in a loft Of new mown hay I find myself a bite to eat Then I’m back up on my feet Thinking I should be Back on my way CHORUS BRIDGE And I whistle it night and day It keeps me going you know And I can’t get it out of my head No mater where I go ---------------------------- So here I am walking along Whistling this strange little song That I haven’t heard Since I was young Still it brings back memories Of the way things used to be I wipe away a tear And sing it again CHORUS
