Story behind the song
"Shenandoah" is an American River Shanty dating back to at least the 1820's. Shenandoah was an Indian Chief living on the Missouri River. Some believe the song originated with the early American Riverboatmen or the Canadian Voyageurs. Whatever its origin, the song has been tremendously popular through the years and has been known by many names, including "The Wide Missourie" and "The Rolling River."
Lyrics
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you, Away, you rolling river! Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you, A - way, I’m bound away, ‘Cross the wide Missouri. The white man loved an Indian maiden, Away, you rolling river! With notions his canoe was laden A – way, I’m bound away, ‘Cross the wide Missouri. Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter Away, you rolling river! For her I’ve crossed the stormy water A – way, I’m bound away, ‘Cross the wide Missouri. Farewell my dear, I’m bound to leave you, Away, you rolling river! Oh, Shenandoah, I’ll not deceive you A – way, I’m bound away, ‘Cross the wide Missouri.
