BFM (I Got Us Killed Again)
OK, a weird one: confessions of a once and future flight-sim junky.
Bruce Irving is a Massachusetts based singer songwriter who writes acoustic and keyboard based pop and country songs in a variety of styles.
Bruce Irving is an eclectic pop singer/songwriter in Central Massachusetts. His music combines influences of 60's and 70's pop with a willingness to incorporate anything that works with the songs, from jazz to power pop to alt country.
Story behind the song
I have to admit it, guys are weird. Before I got my pilot's license (in a Cessna), I was really obsessed with flight sims, especially military ones (I still like them, just not obsessed at the moment). I spent many hours pretending to fly F-15E's, Hellcats, F/A-18's, etc. Land on carriers, attack Baghdad, all that stuff. So it was... kinda like this song. If you are a sim-head (and I will be again, I'm sure), you know the jargon. If not... you don't care. It's just a song about obsession. But just in case... BFM is "basic fighter maneuvers" where rule one is "don't get slow." Rule two is "figure out where the missile is, and don't be there" (or something like that). "Winchester" means out of missiles. "Triple-A" is anti-aircraft artillery.
Dedicated to MiGMan (www.migman.com) and to the late, great Jane's Combat Simulations (I like their sub stuff too -- but no songs yet).
Lyrics
BFM (I Got Us Killed Again)
A MiG on your six is better than no MiG at all
I stay up all night, hoping to get in a big fur-ball
They might be simulated enemies
Just bits in my PC
But the adrenalin rush feels pretty real to me
CHORUS:
The guy in back says,
"Do some of that pilot shit,
And get us out of here!"
As my airspeed and ideas
Suddenly disappear
My wingman is winchester
We're headed for a dee-zas-ter
I forgot my BFM
And I got us killed again
The lights of Baghdad are filling up my screen
And the triple-A blossoms are sprouting in night-vision green
We got the target in our sights
Though it's hard to keep the laser on that spot
When you're jinkin' like a rabbit tryin' to save your butt
CHORUS
BRIDGE
I can't even count the times I've been dead
The wife says it's 3 a.m., when you comin' to bed?
I tell her, he got me six times, now I'm gonna get him,
I'm gonna switch to missiles,
One more mission, honey, God I love this sim!
CHORUS
