European..., all in all --definitely requires a costume: he needs history as his storeroom for costumes. He realises, to be sure, that none of them fits him properly --he changes and changes. Consider the nineteenth century with regard to these rapid predilections and changes in style-masquerade; notice too the movements of despair because 'nothing suits' us-. It is in vain we parade ourselves as romantic or classical or Christian or Florentine or baraque or 'national', in moribus et artibus: the 'cap doesn't fit'! But the 'spirit', especially the 'historical spirit', perceives an advantage even in this despair: again and again another piece of the past and of foreigness is tried out, tried on, taken off, packed away, above all studied --we are the first studious age of in puncto of 'costumes', I mean those of morality, articles of faith, artistic tastes, prepared as no other age has for the grand carnival in style, for the most spiritual Shrovetide laughter and wild spirits, for the transcendental heights of the most absolute nonsense and Aristophanic universal mockery. Perhaps it is precisely here that we are discovering the ream of our invention, that realm where we too can still be original, perhaps as parodists of world history and God's buffoons--perhaps, even if nothing else today has a future, precisely our laughter may still have a future!

Story behind the song
The Elixir 'It is important to realise that alchemists were not merely irreligious magicians but generally highly spiritual men who sought transformation of themselves as well as base metal. It was this all-out participation in self-transformation that became an integral part of their art. The genuine alchemist that his emotional and spiritual characteristics were intimately involved with the success or failure of his experiments. In fact the act of creating gold by alchemical means has become, for many occultists, largely symbolic of making the nature and spirit of humankind more perfect. The creation of the most precious of materials, burnished with gold, derived from a mystical explorations of nature's potential. ...the original alchemists underwent a metaphysical change by enduring the rigours of experimentation. By suffering the ardous risks of unstable compounds, the alchemist evolved an occult philosophy, a path to enlightenment, by causing transmutation within themselves; changing the gross nature of man into one of purity, but only after many years of mental preparation. It is perhaps unfortunate that the great truths by alchemy were often obscured by the secrecy and opaqueness of alchemists who feared the ignorance of the world around them. Excerpts from the article 'Science or Sorcery?' by John Clancy, 'Prediction' magazine.

The Elixir Conversations you may recall We were off the wall intelligent Wishing we had a talisman For all the head drama Too much much to soon we had bad karma While we saw through each and every other We saw how they all changed While we remained the same No one knew the half of us made of rain Could never judge us simple and plain Diverse like this world we lived in The lost soul searched high and low Turned through all the corners Don’t you know I zig-zagged Looked in every place for the truth I never had While footnotes from book sections hold the hope I wrote the antidote Went from the Went from the tribulation to the exaltation Went from the failure to the gain Near to the far Now let me transmute your error Take the elixir elixir Went from the Went from the told to the untold Young to the old Near to the far Now let me transmute your error Take the elixir Little did we know who the fuck we were From what we came Or where we were going No one could say Plus no way of knowing Confused life was contradictory Reading like a fictional story Left with the brunt of the years to bear They didn’t care year after year Transitions all the time With worldly way we wrestled This borderline put his life on the line Found myself as always resting in the chaos From young age this world put us to the test Yes known nothing less We did with little wealth Constantly souls had to grow irenean theodicy While the mass enslaved to the body and money I was try na see what was in front of me You see this place couldn’t hold us They could never mould us Now weve gone our separate ways See you in the later day Went from the...
