Story behind the song
In what seems now like another lifetime, when I was another person, I had been in a very serious relationship with a young lady that I loved very, very much. I was so certain that she and I were perfect for each other and that we would marry someday and be together forever. I think we can all relate to that-the vast majority, if not all, of us have had someone in our lives that we felt (or feel) that way about. I was no different. So we moved in together and I thought things were fantastic. She, as it turned out, did not. Things changed for her in what seemed to me to be overnight (though they actually didn't, I am sure) and when everything fell apart, it was beyond repair. There was no changing things for her. No fixing them. There was nothing to fix. So I packed up all my things and moved out, but in my haste and heartache, I had left something behind. Now, I've told this story countless times since it happened and for the life of me, I can't remember what it was that I left. I guess it's just one more lost detail that doesn't really matter. What does matter, however, is that after a short while I went back to what was once our apartment to pick up my mystery item where I would see her one last time. I went to her place, got my item, and she and I stood in the front hallway for a bit before I left. I remember wanting her to tell me that she had thought things over, that she had reconsidered, that she loved me and wanted to work things out. She never did. And I left. And in time I healed. But a few years after that night, I happened to be watching TV and playing my guitar and this song just came to me out of nowhere, about what I wanted her to have said to me that night. I wrote it in all of 20 minutes. -Dan
Lyrics
How can it be this way? Take one last look, then turn away. I don't know what to say Anymore… This doesn't quite seem how A love like this is supposed to turn out, Tell me what happens now If you go. Chorus: How can we both just turn and leave? Is it really that hard for us to believe? I still go on thinking love is all we need. Stay and let's talk some more. Set down your bag and close the front door. There must be an answer- So just stay. We can make things right. Oh, how you look in the hallway light. Let's take another night And pray. Chorus: How can it be this way? Take one last look, then turn away. I can't seem to make you stay And try. One last thing before you go- Forever I'll always love you. I'm willing to try in the future, you know, So let's not say goodbye.
