Story behind the song
Ashmont (You're Gone) was born a few years ago. Stephen (former BitH member) was playing around with a chord progression on the piano. It was a catchy simple bass line and chords. I loved it. I started to write down lyrics on our message board in the hallway. One verse down. I went to the gym and on the way there came up with the rest of the song. I couldn't wait to get home and have Stephen play those chords again....It all fit. We were so excited. Stephen added some better lyrics and there it was. ASHMONT...or so I thought. Gabriel Mann, our producer thought the chorus was a bit too simple lyrically (that's a good way of putting it), so Jonny, Gabe, and I talked through the song and changed things up a bit. Tim then finished an arrangement that I started and did an awesome job. I loved it. Stephen loved it. The guys loved it.....and I hope you will too. What is it about? It's about choosing your job and money over your loved ones. Sometimes we work too hard. What was an 8 hr workday is now a 10+ hr. workday. We forget to love. To smile and hug and hold hands and to pray and laugh. We just keep our heads down and work. When we do lift up our heads, we look around and no one is there. So Ashmont (You're Gone) is about hoping not to lose the ones we love in the pursuit of careers and riches. - Dave
Lyrics
8 a.m. Your train is leaving. All of my plans are pulling away. I cut myself to see if I am dreaming. Is this how it ends? Right here, today? Please stay. Stay. Please stay. 8 a.m. Your train is leaving. I wish I'd find the right words to say. I wonder if I'd been misleading. Or maybe this is the price I pay. You're gone. (And now I gotta live alone.) You're gone. (Come back to an empty home.) You're gone. (How'd we get so far apart?) I look back now and I wonder if I (CHORUS) tried enough or tried too hard. Get too close or go too far. Can't figure it out, didn't see the signs, Now you're gone, you're gone. Well maybe there's no reason why, but I can't see the good in another goodbye Let's figure it out-show me a sign that we're wrong but you're gone. You're gone, you're gone, you're gone, you're gone... gone… 5 o'clock. Hard time believing. Another day in vain, another empty train. Memory fades, sounds are repeating. But you're the only thing that matters....and now I gotta live alone. But you're gone. (And now I gotta live alone.) You're gone. (Come back to an empty home.) You're gone. (How'd we get so far apart?) I look back now and I wonder if I (CHORUS) 8 a.m. and I'm still waiting.....
