Story behind the song
Bitterroot started as a poem I began writing several years ago trying to hone my skills writing lyrics. It was just on the someday shelf until Alan came up with this incredible drum line. So, I put the poem to it and the rest just fell into place like pieces of a puzzle.
The song is about the Bitterroot Valley in Western Montana where I grew up and is a tribute to all that have the privilege of ever having been there. And to pay respect to the original inhabitants of one of the most incredible places on earth.
I translateed the first line into Salish (The original Indian tribe of the region) as best as I could. Hopelfully I did it Justice.
Lyrics
Bitteroot
Sung in Salish
qʷáyʼɬtuC pyaxíkʼʷiláynʼsinímaɬtálaqptuCʔinímƛʼukʼʷéelʼsmʼʔinímtitʼuləx
In every leaf, a story, in every stream, a song;
The earth holds our ancestors, where we truly find life.
Verse 1
From the mountains embrace to the valleys view,
The Bitterroot calls to us, its spirit so true.
With each step in these meadows, with the wind at our back,
We walk in the footsteps of our ancestors. Remebering our past.
chorus
A child of the Bitterroott the cradle of our past
The mountains stand majestic
their shadows hold us fast.
From the springs of our homeland, to the big sky so bright,
We are the children of the Bitterroot
in nature's pure light.
Verse 2
In springtime, the blossoms paint the valley in cheer,
The songs of our people float on the breeze.
With the rivers as teachers, the mountains our guide,
We gather our stories, with our ancestors beside.
Through fire and through struggle, our culture remains,
In the footprints of our elders, their wisdom sustains.
Chorus
A child of the Bitterroot, the cradle of our past,
The mountains stand majestic, their shadows hold us fast.
From the springs of our homeland, to the big sky so bright,
We are the children of the Bitterroot, in nature's pure light.
Bridge
When the stars blanket the sky, ancient spirits ignite,
We dance beneath the moon, in the soft, silver light.
With the heartbeat of the earth, we sing from our core,
In the heartbeat of the Bitterroot, we find forever more.
Chorus
A child of the Bitterroot, the cradle of our past,
The mountains stand majestic, their shadows hold us fast.
From the springs of our homeland, to the big sky so bright,
We are the children of the Bitterroot, in nature's pure light.
Outro
So come feel the rhythm, let the echoes entwine,
With the Bitterroot's heartbeat, our spirits align.
As the mountains stand watchful, and the valleys rejoice,
Together we honor this land, in one sacred voice.
