prog rock time philosophy
Artist picture
Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
We were given a bit of iceberg to taste in Icy Bay, Alaska, that fell as snow maybe a thousand years ago... it set me off thinking about how restricted our time scales were compared to the wider universe.

LKG 08 Time Am7 Fmaj7Am7G G7F Am7 Fmaj7Am7G G7F C GF Am7C GFG G7 I just ate some thousand year old snow To end its race through time and space Down to the sea below The glaciers themselves may slowly wane It's not my friend how it all ends Their time may come again Earth's slow to move but what's that prove What's the utility Our lives proceed at faster speeds It's all just relativity I just saw some thousand year old light Stretched out far from a river of stars Embedded in the night Streaming off at light speed to the void. No one inclined to pay it mind Pristine unalloyed We cannot race that frantic pace We're trapped here by our speed but minds expand where're they can We have that inner driving need. F CG FF CEmAmEmAmFFD2D2 Physical limitations Can't keep us in our stead Mental intimations Can drive us on so far beyond Our thoughts have gone ahead I just plucked a fossil from the clay 100 million years have passed Since that poor creature breathed its last There really isn't much more I can say The span of time's beyond our ken We're on that carousel again Physical limitations Can't keep us in our stead Mental intimations Can drive us on so far beyond Our thoughts have gone ahead
