It started with a simple little riff and ended.... God knows where... Folk-Prog? Prog-waltz? Never mind, it was great fun :)

New band name for my one man band. The ancient form of my first name.
My name is Holger Luth. I was about 15 years old, when I got my first guitar. Actually it belonged to an older friend, but the never played it, so he let me borrow it. I had been taking piano lessons earlier, but I hated it. The most fun I had with the piano, was to create my own little tunes. i was no good at repetitive rehearsing. It has been the same with my guitar playing. Many of my guitar playing friends, spent hours rehearsing technical stuff. I never had the patience for that, I just did what I thought sounded right. My mind was more directed towards songwriting, than towards being the guitar hero, though I did like to play neverending live solos, long enough to make the bass player make puking sounds and the drummer start throwing sticks at me... I played in both small and larger bands with up to 8-9 people, with violins, flutes and lots of other instruments, but I think my best time in a band, was playing in a three piece. It was in the aftermath of Police, British New Wave, the Danish Punk scene, Danish songwriters like C.V. Jorgensen and many more. You had to invent a lot of new "big" chords, in order to create a bigger sound, being the only guitarist ( and lead singer). Later I started listening a lot to bands like U2, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and most of all Peter Gabriel. Peter is like my guiding star. I have had the luck of seeing him in concert a couple of times in the recent years and even if he has gained a few pounds and is called "Papa Bear" by his bass player, he can still sing better than anyone I know. His voice is directly wired to his heart, it's like every word has its' own set of wings and flies out of his mouth, carrying an important message. Wish I could get anywhere near that! My musical taste has developed over the years and I try out a lot of different genres, out of curiosity and because I get inspired by other musicians, here on SC and by other friends in music. I have 3 sons, that are all engaged in music somehow and they have also inspired me a lot. They have a totally different take on the term "Musician", than I have and I find it inspiring and I am amazed at the multifaceted way they can tackle the tasks of a songwriter, producer and musician. I must admit, that my music sounds a little old fashioned compared to music of today, but what the heck.. I am from 1957, I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Kinks, The Who, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Bob Dylan.. need I say more?

Story behind the song
I came up with a little riff and played it several times, before I found out it was in 5/8. I heard the name Helen in my head when I played the riff, so I came up with this story of a young woman. She is pretty confused and sees herself as on outsider, but actually she is just a human being like the rest of us. None of us have a clue :)
Lyrics
Helen, thinks she's crazy, but she's really just confused. Helen, trusted someone, but was terribly abused. Helen, wants a baby, she would like to start anew. She likes Margarita - Selfies on the media. Wanting to be special - Longing to be social. Blind to those who love her - Thinking they're above her. What has happened?, she said. Is this all that I get? Uuuhhh... Helen, had her baby, now shes having number two. Helen, thinks its wonderful and I think so too! Helen, says she's happy, but she's really just amused. Helen, plays a card, I wonder which one she'll choose? Helen, she's so lovely - Both in mind and body. People show their envy - And it makes her angry! Puts on tons of make-up - Showing that she won't stop. What is too much?, she said. This is all that you get! Uuuhhh... Helen get's married tonight. To, in shining armor, a knight! They're such a wonderful sight. And she's happy at least for tonight..

Cool song, I go back to the '60s hearing this, and that's a good thing IMHO, a lot of great music was made in those long ago days. I really enjoyed listening to this! It's been a while but I do have a new one here, I hope you have time to take a listen: https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=14335114 'Something Borrowed Something New' Take care, Mauri.

Soooooooo good. Dig the rhymic confusion (on my part, not yours) of the first listen before the percussion settles in and I could make sense of it. A confusing song about confusion crafted to perfection.

Yes, this guitar riff is a real keeper. I'm glad you used it to such great effect. Although I really dig Prog Rock, unusual time signatures are something that I find difficult to count or recognise. It doesn't really matter as this song is great whether it's in 9/8 or 7/9 etc. Great song with an excellent professional sound. Top stuff Holger.

Andrew is right. It was a typo from my side. The verse is in 5/8, not 7/8. Still odd, but a little different :0)

There is no measure 7/8 here, I hear two variable measures 5/8 and 6/6. However, this does not negate the fact that the song is fully present in the spirit of art rock. A wonderful arrangement, beautifully recorded both vocal and instrumental parts, a bright overall color. Well done.

Love this Holgar, my new favorite of yours! I hear a strong prog rock element to this. The 7/8 is fantastic, gives it an extra dimension. Excellent lyrics, superb music & arrangement - a definite hit!

Great idea with the panned vocals Holger - not an easy time signature to do - excellent musical work :)
