Story behind the song
Years ago I went up to Ironwood MI for a family reunion, on my Mom's side. It was in July, and the days were relatively warm if a bit overcast, and the evenings were light jacket weather. A poignant place with a lot of history. This song came out of that memorable trip. My Mom's family were warm and welcoming to us folks from the South, and I was struck by the deep roots of the people from that area. Love and family came first. Though the Iron mines the place was probably named after, which long served the Detroit car factories and steel mills, had long been closed, and some moved away, my mom's family stayed.
Lyrics
The meadowlark, she sang a song She sang it sweet, she sang it strong As night turned into day Whispering Wind, she caught the tune Across the hills, under the moon And carried it away. Ironwood! My home away from home! Oh the hills and rivers call me From so very far away! All the mines are standing empty, But they're mining still today, Mining thoughts of Family and Home And dreams, Dreams of yesterday! These craggy peaks, these rocky shores Fond memories of iron ore Are calling out my name! These roots run deep beneath these streets I've heard the hills sing soft and sweet, And I'll never be the same! Ironwood! My home away from home! Oh the hills and rivers call me From so very far away! All the mines are standing empty, But they're mining still today, Mining thoughts of Family and Home And dreams, Dreams of yesterday! Oh, Ironwood! My home away from home! Oh the hills and rivers call me From so very far away! All the mines are standing empty, But they're mining still today, Mining thoughts of Family and Home And dreams, Dreams of yesterday!
