Songs from Trouble at' Mill + other regulars at Gregson Lane Folk Club
TROUBLE at' MILL are a popular folk band who hail from the village of Gregson Lane which lies between Preston & Blackburn. The band consists of husband and wife team - Graham & Bernadette Dixon, for larger gigs we use a bass player and second guitarist The fact that Graham & Bernadette have, for the past 20 years, been organisers of the very popular GREGSON LANE FOLK CLUB is testament to their dedication & enthusiasm in both performing and promoting folk music. The band are very busy and always have a full diary with gigs in theatres, village halls, pubs, clubs and even shopping centres. These activities quite often involve giving 'Joe Public' his first taste of live Folk Music and consequently explaining about the delights of going to a Folk Club to see more of the same. Unashamedly concentrating on the 'popular' folk songs, TROUBLE at' MILL always place the emphasis on entertainment and make a point of not taking themselves too seriously. Their goal is to send the audience home with both, a smile on its face and an urge to seek out more live folk music.

Story behind the song
From a story my father (Norman Dixon used to tell)
Lyrics
What will I do next Thursday Me bowling partners gone? I'll have to roll a few ends on me own I'll never forget old Charlie And all those games of bowls Why did he have to leave me all alone Thursday afternoon routine Upon the Castle bowling green Charlie sent the block over the crown Then he showed his wood to Ray Thumb bias to display With foot on the mat He sent his first bowl down First two woods were truly in Cocksure that he was going to win Threw down Picked up his mat and turned to bowl again But for this second leg He opted finger peg And ignored those first few drops of heavy rain Pride it comes before a fall Poor Charlie never bowled that bowl The lightning struck him square upon the head Ray grimaced at the flash Then gazed on the pile of ash Mouth open wide his best friend Charlie dead Chorus The following Thursday came around Ray stood upon that patch of ground The very spot where Charlie met his end He shed a little tear And he said this little prayer As he sent one down in memory of his friend Chorus Then to Rays surprise He could not believe his eyes Across the green a blinding flash of light And there holding a wood An apparition stood It was Charlie dressed all in angelic white Charlie said "Don't Panic Ray I've come back down here to say The bowling greens up there are magnifique Ray said that's really good to know But Charlie said here comes the blow Gods got you down for a game up there next week Chorus
