Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
A fun song written after our stay in Dalhousie last year… and the bagpipes are genuine Indian, playing in The Judges Court, Pragpur last Diwali.
Lyrics
Down on the plains of Punjab they're burning off the fields |C|C| Trading pollution for a slight increase of yield|Am|Bb F| But up here in the mountains the air is crisp and bright|C|C| So never fear come over here and keep me warm tonight|Dm|Bb |Bb| The smoke on the horizon turns the sun a deeper red We can watch it safely through the window from our bed Brought up in the city don't be startled by a growl If your luck is hot you may just spot a leopard on the prowl Welcome to Dalhousie|F|C| High up in the pines|F|C| The locals say Dalhojji|Eb Bb| But I think that's rather dodgy |Eb Bb| With such a Scots ancestral line |C|C| Welcome to Dalhousie High up on the ridge And when the ice gets slicker You won't need to keep your liquor In the fridge Down on the plains of Punjab the dust can clog your lungs Backbreaking work can get you feeling old while you're still young So head up to Dalhousie, don't shackle up with pride Take that trip and let it put a spring back in your stride Repeat chorus Down on the plains of Punjab the heat can sear your brain|C|C| Or wash you clean away in torrential monsoon rain |Am|Bb F| But up here in the mountains you live your life at ease|C|C| The air is fresh as you could wish|Eb Bb| The trees are green by rushing streams|Eb Bb| The birds sing strong the whole day long|Eb Bb| The buzzing bees high in the trees|Eb Bb| Mossy bowers profuse with flowers |Eb Bb| Your troubles end and you can spend your time as best you please |Eb Bb|C|C| Repeat chorus (sections reversed) Bagpipes over instrumental verse to fade… NB played with capot on three… so around the A shape
