Story behind the song

If you would rather enjoy this piece of art and have it come to mean something truly unique to you, do not read the backstory. Just as the band “Aerosmith” once criticized the music video industry of robbing fans from having their own visions of imagery associated to a song and supplanting it with some “official” footage, so too can knowing a songs backstory potentially come to rob it of having some special place and meaning for you.

The Official Backstory
This is a song about … Godzilla.
Yes, Godzilla.
Richard and I both happened to be fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000, and the old Godzilla movies. Admittedly, Richard was a truer fan of the genre and retained a lot more knowledge of the history than I.
Many old movies would pit Godzilla against another giant monster of some kind. All of them with names ranging from cryptic to ridiculous, and perhaps the worst name of them all was one simply “Bug Eyed Monster”.
B.E.M. = “Bug Eyed Monster”
We were at a rehearsal playing with the idea of making a song about B.E.M. and this was what happened with that.
I wasn’t truly sure what to write, lyrically. I figured since the depiction in the movies was such that Godzilla and his adversaries were widely regarded within those films by the civilians in the stories as though they were Gods (even Godzilla’s namesake) – I’d try to write a libretto critical of religion and power with a dash of “Might is right” thrown in for color.
It isn’t elegant, but it was never meant to be a serious piece.
