Thought I'd have a go at writing a song about the remarkable Arctic Ground Squirrel. Instruments used are a Vintage VE2000GG acoustic guitar tuned in DADGAD and an Ashbury Mandolin.

Story behind the song
I saw a video about the Arctic Ground Squirrel a few months back and wondered if a song could be done about one. It's remarkable that in hibernation the brain and core body temperatures drops below freezing, believed to be the coldest in any hibernating mammal. Periodically neurons kick in and heat things up for the brain to recover before letting the temperature fall again.
Lyrics
Up in the tundra, down in frozen ground A parker squirrel sleeping so very sound Heart rate almost nil, body below freezing Neurons kick into life, peak and then start easing It's thirty below, out there in the snow Stay safe, stay here, deep in your burrow So you lie there, waiting for the spring and for your long hibernation to end It's coming up to May, and finally you can Emerge from the ground, into treeless surround It's just ten below, out here in the snow Now you breathe the air, released from your burrow Feed well up here, on grasses and on willow Keep alert for danger, the lynx and the eagle You've such a short time, to enjoy your new found freedom Up here above ground, in the breeze and the sun It's just ten below, out here in the snow Stay safe, stay here, out from your burrow INST It's not long to go, store food for the future Winter fast approaching, don't be a loser Up in the tundra, down in frozen ground A parker squirrel sleeping again Heart rate almost nil, body below freezing Neurons kick into life, peak and then start easing It's thirty below, out there in the snow Stay safe, stay here, deep in your burrow Mark Patterson 12/06/2016
