Story behind the song
*WARNING* If you would rather enjoy this piece of art and have it come to mean something truly unique to you, do not read the backstory. Just as the band “Aerosmith” once criticized the music video industry of robbing fans from having their own visions of imagery associated to a song and supplanting it with some “official” footage, so too can knowing a songs backstory potentially come to rob it of having some special place and meaning for you. Or both can exist. It’s all really subjective. Proceed with understanding. Thank you, V The Official Backstory This is another song about Jade. This was written while with them when they were performing a three day fast and sweet grass ceremony. I was using Jade’s Yamaha acoustic nylon string guitar campfire side when I wrote it. I seldom ever sing and play guitar at the same time. As a matter of fact, I’ve only ever done so around Jade, come to think of that. I remember being so frustrated trying to sing in the range it was intended for and struggling with managing the rhythmic sense of the lyrics in that they are largely counterpoint to the guitar part. It is hard for me to imagine singing it, but I even showed it to Jade’s mother – it just seemed a lot more possible when they were there somehow. I can’t explain it. I’d be far too shy and embarrassed to try to do that for anyone under any other circumstances. It is difficult to share what is in my head when I only have a guitar to show a song like this to someone. I know it sounded flat compared to the full instrumentation I had in my head, yet specifically with Jade, I never felt that they didn’t get what it would be in full. Looking at the lyrics now it seems like I wore my heart on my sleeve, but in retrospect I never had an option not to. Not really. It was known. Words were not required. Silence was comfortable. Words were for the sake of just wanting to hear the others voice, but there was no communication needing the air full of words. This song is a confession to how they are on my mind every day, in essentially every dream, and that I will always feel this way, willing to reach out for them – and regardless thankful they were able to reveal myself to me. No matter where I end up in the turmoil of life, I only need to close my eyes and reflect on them to remind myself of who I really am deep down. A long time ago, Jade had a ghostwriting name, just like “Vagenda” is mine. That ghostwriting name was “Eva Patterson”. It’s a very clever name. If you say it very fast with a Russian accent, it begins to sound like “Evil Person”. Apart Jade is equally capable of self-hate as I am. This was the origin of the name. The point of the title of this song is to shine a positive light on the name and have it transcend its own origin and blossom in the eyes of others into the beauty I know its namesake’s holder is.
Lyrics
The Good In Eva Patterson (Transcend) © 2000 Vagenda. All rights reserved (Composed at age 23) (Recorded on December 6, 2015) Every morning starts the same Dreams break on your name And the light, through my eyes Like waves crashing down on the shore I realize It slowly reminds me Of an innocence All but lost Except when your Soft embrace As I look through your eyes You warm my soul 'Till it melts my disguise My peace of mind is as far away As the reach of your hand Yet your self-worth and good intentions Might-as-well be scribed in the sand Though washed away in this ocean of time I know I'll always understand Lost but never alone Adrift and searching for home The world is so demanding I close my eyes And despite all the lies I still know where I'm standing
