I am a retired roofer. I played in a band in New York in the 60s and 70s, we did very small gigs, parties, weddings etc. I have always loved music.

Story behind the song
Some people struggle with alcohol addiction. This guy is trying to deal with his and has suffered a setback. He is considering whether he wants to keep trying, or just give in. It's a long uphill road to stay sober. As he considers what to do, he is favoring the setback, it is easier, but he acknowledges that if he does, he has to start all over again, if he wants to succeed. Maybe he'll finally see the vanity of that.
Lyrics
Liquor and Pain Words and music by Tom McGuire Key of G 85 BPM time I'm standing at the crossroad of liquor and Pain deliberating on why I never learn anything. I'd a wagered money that I would never be this vain. To end up on the crossroad of liquor and Pain. Pain is a rough road, and it moves mighty slow. Seems like forever to get where you want to go. There ain't no shortcuts, there ain't no free rides. There's blockades and potholes, and all the signs point to pride. Should I hop on the whiskey or take the grape vine? If I get on the whiskey it could save me some time. I can get off on the bourbon, then take the mountain moonshine. But they'll leave me at the bottom, with the same hills to climb. I'm standing at the crossroad of liquor and Pain deliberating on why I never learn anything. I'd a wagered money that I would never be this vain. I took the fast-lane to the crossroad of liquor and Pain.
