"The threats that face you are too many to explain individually, and can produce any number of apparent anomalies, or even natural phenomenon. Radio-waves, light, heat, distortions of the underlying fabric, all can signal the presence of a potential threat. You must keep an eye on these. To suggest that any one tool is useful against even a fraction of what you face would be misleading, but there is almost no tool you could develop which would not have some use against something. The key is developing what tools you can before you encounter the unknown.
'But beware, for I am not advocating unbridled development of tools and exploration. Extreme caution must be exercised. Some tools can accelerate the worst of processes, others can be to the unexpected benefit of forces you are not even aware of. And exploration is the greatest threat of all, to extend the fingers of your race into whole new environments you have not yet fully understood is the greatest threat to yourselves. To continue to probe your oceans is to wake your sleeping father, to continue your crawl across Mars is to risk disturbing the souls in the stone, and Andromeda... Andromeda is a lie.
