Story behind the song
Hitchhiking isn't what it used to be. It used to be when you needed to get somewhere and you didn't have a car you could count on the kindness of strangers to help you out. Usually people would welcome a stranger just to have someone to talk to. It helped to pass the time. Today you don't know who's out there or what they're capable of. People are murdered everyday for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's hard these days to put your safety in the hands of strangers. It's even harder to invite a stranger into your car and in closed quarters. They might take your money, your car, your life or all of the above. Usually if you see someone stranded on the road side walking with a gas can or standing near a parked car broken down you feel a little safer helping them out, but it's the roughin' it crowd traveling the country side on foot that make you nevous. There are still a few kind hearted and generous people out there, but they are far and few between rides. You know, I've heard about people going to Europe and hitchhiking all over the countries. I wonder if it's changed there too?
