I'm So Down

The title says it all. While the lyrics say "sad", the music says...well, "It's not so bad". A friend described the sound as a cross between Leonard Cohen and the Fugs, with a bit of mid-70s Dylan thrown in. See "Story Behind The Song" for more.

The music of Lee Shapiro, which consists of a variety of styles and genres. I would appreciate if you "liked" or commented on any of the songs you enjoy.
My favorite kinds of music is the kind that surprises you. While I enjoy conventional type songs (verse, chorus, verse chorus, bridge, chorus), I prefer songs that take you on an adventure. This includes jam songs (Grateful Dead), and songs with many detours and lots of dynamics (Rickie Lee Jones, Dave Matthews). Although most of my songs tend to fall into some kind of normal verse/chorus formula, I do tend to try and mix things up a bit. Which is why most of my songs last longer than 4 or 5 minutes.

Story behind the song
When I first started this song it was a slow piano ballad. But over the period of a week of adding and tweaking, subtracting and tweaking, it turned into something else. Started at 85 bpm and ended up at 105 bpm which is why it's only 4:23 (for me a very short song) I never intended to upload this song, I never intended to share it with anyone, and who knows...maybe I should have stuck with my first instincts. But I keep listening to it over and over again. Usually when I finish a song, I've been working on it non-stop for many days and become too close to it to be objective. But if I find myself listening to it over and over, tapping my foot, and thinking this part is really good, then I kind of know I got something. So there might be a few cringe-worthy parts, but there's a few really good parts too. I liked the layered vocals and the different backup vocal parts, including a sampled female vocal part with "ooohs and ahhhs". I worked forever on the mix and effects, and over a few days it evolved into something totally different and unexpected. But I don't take it too seriously, in fact it reminds me of the song Lily Von Shtoop sang, "I'm Tired" in the classic Mel Brooks' film "Blazing Saddles. "Let's face it...I'm so damn down"
Lyrics
Not feeling to good these days Sad eyes on the longest face Smile gone without a trace I'm So Down I'm So Down I think about it every day But the days roll into one long drag Time stopped and I lost my way Without time the universe is mad....and it makes me sad The fastest smile I ever wore The fastest laugh I ever bore The fastest feeling empty right down to the core All alone with nothing to say Can't find the words anyway The only place I wanna stay is down... I'm So Down I'm So Down Don't blink or you'll miss my smile Don't pity me, it's not worth the while Don't stay 'cause I'll only bring us both down. I'm So Down I'm So Down I think about it every day But the days roll into one long drag Time stopped and I lost my way Without time the universe is mad The fastest high I ever smoked The fastest smile without a joke The fastest dice I never got a chance to roll The fastest dream that slips away The fastest gleam that turned to grey The fastest scene that ever faded away One cigarette through the fastest pack Another carton I gotta cut back But I can't find the will to get on track The fastest smile I ever wore The fastest laugh I ever bore The fastest feeling empty right down to the core The fastest laugh, the longest cry The more I hurt, the less I try The fastest smile is only just a little white lie The fastest dream that slips away The fastest gleam that turned to grey The fastest scene that ever faded away
