a bit of late night soul on a hot summer's night
singer/songwriter, sax player and sound engineer, I have created multiple CD's in my home studio using pro-tools and plug ins.
Story behind the song
One fine evening in early June I was in the mood for something soulful. I hit artist: Jill Scott on my ipod and let the mood take me. So much of her material is so very subtle and sensual, with these cool, sexy grooves; so that was my inspiration for this tune.
I messed around with some different funk patches on Strike - found one that was pretty cool, and soloed just the kick drum from that patch. I followed with the sticks from a different snare patch and together - voila, the foundation for this groove.
Having a groove I knew I wanted a quasi chicken scratch, wah wah, guitar lick that, while relentless, had a lot of space - but didn't even know what chord progression I wanted to use… so I used the KISS method (keep it simple, stupid!) and hit on this kinda jazzy D major to D minor riff - yep, a 2 chord song LOL!
Adding mood is a soft electronic keyboard patch run through a phase shifter with tons of reverb - very spacey and ethereal, and just perfect for that smoky, late night feel. If you listen closely (not advisable said the man behind the curtain…) you'll also hear a 2nd guitar that enters in the 2nd verse - just a lil thang played through a flange… just adding a little something.
So I had a song, or at least a groove - but no lyrics. As the groove is that aforementioned after midnight feel, and still hearing Jill Scott almost moaning for love, I decided to head into that arena of sensuality. Once I closed my eyes and imagined, the words started to flow and I couldn't wait to start singing this, hoping to almost melt into the microphone.
Finally, just in case the song wasn't taking you THERE, I added a sultry sax melody and then just grooved to the groove on the solo and extended long fade. Umm Umm good. I need a cigarette!! (hell no, but you catch the drift).
