Lyrics
"Terriers are precious dogs," Mother used to say, "The best of all, a Scotty dog." She longed for one someday. She raised her kids with other pets, But never lost the thought. Throughout the years, it remained A Scotty that she sought. Pet stores are verboten. Their ethics, very few. But the moment that she saw him, Suddenly she knew... "You're a very special dog. The one that's meant for me. How'd I manage all this time Without your company?" Bristly coat, one floppy ear, A snout fit for a bear. Homely as the day is long, But mother didn't care. Muscles weak and wobbly, Caged for way too long. Mother carried him on walks Until his legs grew strong. Spoiled with impunity, She gave him homecooked food. Couldn't bear to scold him, And regularly cooed... "You're a very special dog. The one that's meant for me. I can't imagine what I'd do Without your company." She never saw his birthday; Felled by a massive stroke. She lived but never walked again Or laughed or even spoke. It didn't matter to her dog. He'd snuggle close and nap, Nudge her hand for petting, Curl up in her lap. He'd wait beside her patiently For games she couldn't play. And cock his head to listen As she'd mutely say... "You're a very special dog. The one that's meant for me. I can't imagine what I'd do Without your company." The little dog outlived her. He still had work to do. He comforted the family, And helped to get them through. Father shared his sandwiches. Daughters took him hiking. For old folks in wheelchairs, He had a special liking. And then, too young, the Scotty died. He made his final choice. Faithfully he tracked her down, Heard that familiar voice... "You're a very special dog. The one that's meant for me. How'd I manage all this time Without your company?" Terriers are precious dogs. Mother told me so. The best of all, a Scottie dog. I've seen it, and I know.
