Story behind the song
The song "Dixie" was originally written by a Northerner, who was appalled that it was used as an anthem by a government that was fighting to preserve slavery. I thought that this was a song worth saving, and so I took a but of the melody and built "Whistling Dixie" around it.
Lyrics
“Whistling ‘Dixie’ ” Capers Simmons VERSE I Hush, my child; you will never be alone Even though you are so far from home And the world outside’s so dark and cold I will stay here by your side When the warm winds blow from the lands below They will bring you memories From another place Where our fathers slaved So that we could then be free CHORUS I am not just whistling “Dixie” now For I know what the South can do It can make you blind, it can close your eyes To the pain men put men through Still, I long to see the magnolia trees As they reach into blue skies I am not just whistling “Dixie”, now It’s a Carolina lullaby VERSE II As I lay thee down to sleep I will pray the Lord thy soul to keep From the dreams of wars and tragedies In a land where the past can’t die When the cold winds blow and they bring the snow May it cover all these sins From another time When our fathers died May it stay gone with the wind ~ CHORUS (2x) ~
