Story behind the song
A story of the Pals Battalions in WWI. The idea at the time was to recruit groups of friends - pals - from sports teams and workplaces to create good military units. When a number of Pals Battalions from Lancashire were mown down on the first day of the Somme, the effect in the villages and towns caused the army to quietly ditch the idea.
Lyrics
Verse
All pals together
On the village green
Opening the bowling
For the village team
First we'll take these Burnley boys
Then we'll take the Hun
Back in the time for Christmas lads
When the fighting's done
Chorus
Cause we're all pals together
All pals as one
From the playgrounds and the village greens
To the mortars and the magazines
But they're gone gone gone
All pals as one
Verse
Swapped their whites for khaki
Turned out for the King
He says if you stay together lads
You needn't fear a thing
First you'll take their trenches
Then you'll take their guns
And then you'll take the boat back home
Before the season's begun
Chorus
And you're all pals together
All pals as one
From the playgrounds and the village greens
To the mortars and the magazines
But they're gone gone gone
All pals as one
Verse
There's daisies on the wicket now
And the outfield's overgrown
In Burnley and Darwen and Chorley
The pals aren't coming home
First they packed the bat and balls
Then they locked the doors
Now the old men read the record books
While the papers keep the score
Chorus
And they're all pals together
All pals as one
From the playgrounds and the village greens
To the mortars and the magazines
But they're gone gone gone
They're gone gone gone
All pals as one
