Story behind the song
Besieged in the Alcazar (castle) the Colonel must choose between surrender or the sacrifice of his son, held by the Republican forces at the gates.
Lyrics
The International Brigade are waiting at the gates. An old shirt Colonel of Spain considers this latest test of faith. Facing the Castillian sun, black tabacco grips his lungs. The voice on the phone is his son, "father, surrender, or I'm done" With his back to the priests and the murdering Falangists, and the cries of the brandy soaked wounded attended by black laced grandees. Son give praise to God, cry arriba Espana! and die like a man. Father these things, they will be done.
