BEN GROSSCUP performs songs of struggle and social critique -- taking on issues like student debt, ecological breakdown, and economic injustice. His songs contain a moral clarity about the need for social change and they nurture the longing in each of us for a freer society. His powerful voice and thumping guitar are the foundation for lyrics that make no apology for having a position on contemporary events. Based in Amherst, MA, Ben is an activist involved in organizing for immigrant rights, ecological justice, and resisting military violence. He serves on the Steering Committee of People’s Music Network. e-mail: stokingthefires (at) riseup (dot) net Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcclaj304spiIAO_q2WmXeA?feature=watch

Story behind the song
This song was inspired by many previous blizzards, and a note I received from a friend during Winter Storm Nemo (2013) where she mentioned how happy she was to be snuggled in at home and unable to go anywhere else. It got me thinking that maybe the "freedom" we enjoy from being simply unconstrained really is no freedom at all.
Lyrics
When the blizzard comes is when I feel most free There’s nowhere else I can go to, so all my time belongs to me There’s no noise coming from the roadway, just the roaring of the wind Where did this freedom come from, and how much longer ‘fore it ends? Here comes the snow fall Here comes the great big snow fall When it melts away will I recall How I felt in the great snow fall The snow drifts have settled and buried all the streets The tracks of cars are outnumbered by the tracks from people’s feet As my neighbors greet me, I don’t worry where I have to be Stranded here with all of you, I let go, and I feel free As the storm lays down its icy crystal sheet Throughout town the power lines buckle, and there goes the light and heat I never asked for my neighbors’ help before the big storm came But something feels so different now, like it may never feel the same Listen to the news, they want the cars out of the way Because crews are fast at work, plowing the blizzard off the freeway” Now I can surely sympathize if you got somewhere to go But I don’t want to lose the freedom I found while stranded in the snow So bring in the snow fall Bring in the great big snow fall When it melts away will I recall How we felt in the great snow fall Yes, bring in the snow fall Bring in the great big snow fall When it melts I hope we’ll all recall How we felt in the great snow fall
