I found the lyrics in an old Church of Scotland hymnbook from 1927. In earlier times there used to be a late night radio close down by the name Ere I Sleep, usually presented by a man of the cloth. This title put me in mind of that.

Story behind the song
I found the lyrics in an old Church of Scotland hymnbook from 1927. In earlier times there used to be a late night radio close down by the name Ere I Sleep, usually presented by a man of the cloth. This title put me in mind of that. The word were written by a John Cennick 1718-55. I've no idea what the original melody sounded like, this is just my acoustic doodle.
