Story behind the song
I was walking by the basement door on my way to bed one night and I don't know why but I headed down to the studio. It was midnight and I started thinking about an idea of this guy who no matter what still has "his girl". The real life inspiration is my neighbor who works for a steel company and is out the door everyday at 5:30 AM. Ouch! So I stayed up until 4 AM coming up with the 1st two verses and 1st two lines of the chorus. After getting 2 hours of sleep I got my kids off to school and headed to the studio to keep writing. I very quickly was down with a cold after the 2 hour sleep night and trudged through many days of singing and coughing and writing. I agonized as to which way to go with this guy and in the end decided to stay with him lamenting his choices and going on a "flight of fancy" on a sailboat escaping his life only to be brought back to reality by the whistle at his steel mill. This man goes home though and has the unconditional love of his girl. She simply "believes" in him through all his doubts and his meager life. It may seem a bit of a Hollywood ending because he begins to believe in himself because she says, "You can rise up, you can overcome, you can believe". But that is something that the music "told" me to do. When I started playing those gospel chords at the end it just took me to a place of "belief"...
Lyrics
I break my back everyday working steel out in the cold My hands are cracked and calloused this job bleeds life from my soul I’ve let so many years go by all the dreams I had are gone I’m driving home in my truck tonight I can tell the brakes are shot Damn it’s another $500 bucks that I know I ain’t got But as I pull into the driveway I see the bedroom light come on I’ve still got you That’s what I hold onto When you look into my eyes That’s when I feel alive When you say that I’ll be the only man you’ll ever love I believe your words will always be true I’ve Still Got You Holding on to this rusty riveted beam in the rain I can’t help to think what my life could have been If I had only stayed in college and stuck it out until the end Sometimes I’m sailing on the ocean in the sun I’m the Captain of my vessel not what I’ve become But then I hear the whistle blow and I go back home again I’ve still got you That’s what I hold onto When you look into my eyes That’s when I feel alive When you say that I’ll be the only man you’ll ever love I believe your words will always be true I’ve still got you But what do you see in me I don’t see much of anything But you believe in me You can rise up You can overcome You can believe You believe in me I can rise up I can overcome ‘Cause you believe in me I’ve Still Got You Still Got You And you believe in me
