Story behind the song
In the summer after my freshman year at the U. of Washington, I took a freshman English course on poetry. Impresssed by WC Williams' use of color, I decided to write a poem with lots of colors. After lunch, I spent two hours writing and came up with nothing. In frustration, I wrote, "I drew a blank and painted it black." I got up from my seat at a Chinese restaurant on the University Way and started walking up the 45th. I guess I must have illegally parked at the U. Village, because I remember I was walking back to my car. On the 45th, as I was passing by people, trees, signs, I wrote the rest of the song.
