Story behind the song
I came up with the hook "2nd Fiddle To That Old Guitar" and conceptually had the rough idea mapped out. My friend and songwriter John Cadley heard it one day and offered to take a stab at writing the lyrics. He came back with some clever lyrics, a very slick blues progression and the cool Chuck Berry riffs and references. I then arranged it and demoed it at my studio. John played electric and acoustic guitar on the demo. Joe Davoli played fiddle.
Lyrics
Well honey when you swear you’re being true to me
You’re overlooking one small technicality
I’m talking ‘bout that guitar sitting on your knee
You’ve been holding it more than you’ve been holding me
Before you got that guitar we were going strong
Making sweet music all night along
But now instead of strumming on my old heart strings
All you want to do is just pick that thing
Well the way you’ve been banging on that piece of wood
Lord you’d swear that your name was Mr. Johnny B. Goode
Strumming to the rhythm of the railroad cars
While I’m playing 2nd Fiddle To An Old Guitar
Well that guitar is not a woman but it might as well be
Because I’m feeling the same kind of jealousy
With that hourglass figure and that long neckline
Heck it’s even got curves that are firmer than mine
If I’m going to have a rival baby this ain’t fair
I can’t scratch it’s eyes I can’t pull it’s hair
I can’t even get you out on that front porch swing
When you’re tied to that body with 6 steel strings
Well the way you’ve been banging on that piece of wood
Lord you’d swear that your name was Mr. Johnny B. Goode
With your name up in lights just like a country star
Well I’m playing 2nd Fiddle To An Old Guitar
So if 2nd fiddle is really what you want me to play
I’m sure you won’t object to what I’ve got to say
I’m going to pack up my fiddle take it out on the town
And find a man who wants to do a little fiddling around
‘Cause if you’re gonna be married to that piece of wood
I ain’t gonna be no Mrs. Johnny B. Goode
Sitting at the bottom of your repertoire
Playing 2nd Fiddle to An Old Guitar
To An Old Guitar
To That Old Guitar
