KaBERTRAM!!! ...it's all about the music.
Welcome to KaBertram!!! - an explosion of sound, motion, entertainment, and talented people from all around the world, all making music together. And if KaBertram! was a hurricane, then Ray Bertram would be the eye at the center of the storm. Ray, a life-long "compulsive writer," started writing at a very age and he's never stopped. When Ray turned his writing in the direction of lyrics in 2008, things really started hopping. Working together with good friend and partner, musician/song-writer/producer and creative genius John Surbaugh, Ray co-founded BCC Global: The Back Country Connection, which made it possible for him to take his writing and cover the world with it. Ray has now seen his writing produced into songs in the United States (Tennessee, California, Ohio, North Caroline, Georgia), Sweden, The Netherlands, South Africa, England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, and beyond. In 2010, Ray and another one of his frequent partners, Swedish singer/musician/song-writer/producer Anders Larson, were signed by the prominent Swedish promotional house, Hit Works, and in the time since numerous of their songs have been placed under contract and aggressively marketed all around the world. And, to date, Ray's writing has been produced into songs covering many genres, including Pop, Euro-Pop, Folk-Rock, Country, Rock-a-billy, Adult Contemporary, Jass/Swwing, Rap, and more. Ray continues to write and to continually direct his creative energies onward and upward, always striving to reach higher and to move in new directions. Story behind the song
I love John Surbaugh to death - he's one of the best friends that I've ever had. One day, back in 2008, the daughter of one of our good mutual friends passed away and our friends loss touched both John and I very deeply. A few days later, John tossed me the basic outline of the thematic vehicle behind this song...and I instantly fell in love with it. John’s got an incredibly big heart and he'd written some of the prettiest lines - they were simply beautiful. I was working on a project for somebody else at the time that needed to be done, so I let what he shared wait a couple of days while it rolled around inside my head and picked up shape. That Friday - as I went camping with my then 4 year old daughter - I finished the other project and I was able to devote my full attention to this project. As we pitched our camp, as I played with my daughter around the state park, after she’d gone to sleep and I was sitting up late into that night in my tent by lantern light, I was amazed at how quickly and how easily ideas for this lyric came to me as I further developed what John had shared with me…it was almost like it was writing itself. I didn’t know it at the time, but as I camped there with my daughter, my wife's father was all ready in the process of dying that night. He had been ill for a couple of weeks with what he had thought was just a severe stomach flu, but it turned out that he was a lot sicker than he or anybody else realized…the following morning they had to rush him to the hospital and from there he deteriorated very rapidly. He passed away less than 2 days later. Now I have to wonder at how this lyric came so easily to me that night under the stars - it seems so strange in light of what was going on elsewhere at the time I was working on it…or maybe it’s not strange at all, you know? Maybe that’s just how things are set up to work on that level that we just can’t quite understand or see from here. I hope that you like this song...and maybe it will move you the way that it has moved us.
Lyrics
An Angels Song Chorus: I thought I heard an angels’ song Passing through the trees I thought I heard an angels’ song Carried on the breeze It lifted me up It carried me along I can close my eyes And hear the angels’ song Verse 1: The snow…it feels so cold It falls all around A quiet white blanket It covers the ground The sun comes shining out It melts the snow The rain starts coming down And the flowers grow Pre-Chorus: My heart is heavy, And full of woe, I have so many questions There’s so much I don’t know Chorus: And then I hear an angels’ song Passing through the trees Yes, I hear an angels’ song Carried on the breeze It lifts me up It carries me along I can close my eyes And hear the angels’ song Verse 2: I see the flowers bloom Spring is in the air Young hearts run wild and free Life is ev’rywhere Our time is short and sweet Our moments few I watch the children play And I think of you Pre-Chorus: My heart is heavy, And full of woe, I have so many questions There’s so much I don’t know Chorus: Yes, I heard an angels’ song Passing through the trees Yes, I heard an angels’ song Carried on the breeze It lifted me up It carried me along I can close my eyes And hear the angels’ song “An Angels Song” (c) 2008, by John Surbaugh/W.
