A song about animals . . . and elections in the U.S.
Political/personal songs since the 1960s -- killer ballads, working-class anthems, political satire. Fred's twelve-string guitar can be anything from a blues ba
Fred Stanton’s songs (along with his lumberjack voice and jumbo 12-string guitar) embody the political folk-singing tradition. Fred has been an industrial worker (a welder of oilfield equipment; an electronic assembler; and a railroad electrician, hostler and brakeperson) as well as a political organizer and union activist. This life is at the heart of his songsmoving, personal ballads, rollicking satires, and working-class anthems. Fred has been singing in concerts, union rallies and political protests since the 1960s. His union songs celebrate the struggles of strikers at Peabody Coal, poultry processing workers in North Carolina, and strawberry pickers in California. And his "Singing Cars," a Bronx salute to car alarms, has been featured on NPR’s "Car Talk" show. Newest songs include “Five-Dollar Coal,” which is the story of miners in Utah fighting for a union.

Lyrics
When Elephants Fly If wishes were knishes, wouldn’t life be delicious, If hopes were dope, we would all be so high, If elections and circuses filled up our bellies, We could take a day off and watch elephants fly. Chorus: Elephants fly, elephants fly, We could take a day off and watch elephants fly. When the elephants fly, the rain will be lemonade, Falafel will fall like hail from the sky, We will all love each other like sisters and brothers, On that great day when the elephants fly. Chorus: Elephants fly, elephants fly, On that great day when the elephants fly. If wishes were fishes, the sea would be full again, We’d stand on the shore and they’d jump in our hands. The buffalo would roam, we’d all have a home, We could take a day off to see jackasses dance. And the jackasses dance with the elephants As we watch from the wallflower line. A giraffe says, c’mon, don’t you wanna dance? It’s so democratic, let’s dip one more time. It’s a waltz for the shirkers and a war on the workers, We need our own party in the mills and the mines. When the power is ours, we can plant us some flowers, Watch the jackasses dance and the elephants fly. Chorus: Elephants fly, elephants fly, Watch the jackasses dance and the elephants fly.
