We sat around the kitchen table
While Mom was busy making dinner
Laughing and joking
About the day we had
Dad would usually stop
To grab a beer with his friends
If he stayed too long
He'd have to make amends
We'd call him at the bar
They'd say he wasn't there
One of us would yell in the phone
Tell him to come home
In about an hour or so
He'd stagger up the sidewalk
And slip in the door
"Everybody, I'm home"
As the years went rolling by
I grew restless like the breeze
Like my old man I took to the road
Never stayed anywhere too long
Just long enough to want to leave
Everybody needs a place to call home
Been away so long
Now I'm going home
I paid my dues for now
Give me my walking shoes
Everybody needs a safe place to escape
I know my way- I'm going home
Been away so long
Now I'm going home
Been away far too long
Now I'm going home
