Story behind the song
I wanted an upbeat Christmas song and I wanted to touch on the wonder of the Incarnation (whether you accept it as reality or myth, it's pretty wonderful). I think this song accomplishes both. I allowed the African Children's Choir to use the tracks (this recording but without my lead vocal) in their ministry; it appears on several of their albums from the 1980s.
Lyrics
Can you imagine that night? Can you imagine that night?
The night our Lord was born
Can you conceive of a star shining so heavenly bright
it drew wise men from afar
Can you imagine it? Can you imagine that night?
Can you imagine it? Can you imagine that night?
I wish I had been there - I wish I had been there, too
To hear the angels sing
To fall on my knees and cover my face
and feel the beating of their wings
Can you imagine it? Can you imagine that night?
Can you imagine it? Can you imagine that night?
The infant Jesus gave up all of heaven's glories above
To live for us -- to die for us -- in love
What about Mary? And what about Joseph
Mere mortals, touched by God's hand
Chosen to do His will and faithfully following
Not waiting, not waiting to understand
Can you imagine it? Can you imagine that night?
Can you imagine it? Can you imagine that night?
