Story behind the song
This song is one I wrote about ten years ago. It's about a couple that is having relationship troubles, and how one of them is always on the verge of leaving. The singer wants her to stay on "My Side of the Door." I reached back into my own experiences, as I try to do with all of my music. I recorded this one during the peak of country music popularity, and you will note the "southern" accent. Being from Oregon, I actually have a Northwestern accent. It still sounds somewhat authentic, although probably not so to a true southerner. Enjoy.
Lyrics
You say "goodbye", but do you mean goodbye forever?
Because you've said goodbye so many times before
I know you try to tell yourself it's really over
But then you still remain on my side of the door
So many tears we both have cried as you are leaving
So many times that I'm no longer keeping score
So if you mean to really leave this time, I'm hoping
that you don't linger here on my side of the door
Chorus
For much as I want you near, I'd rather you go
If you can't find happiness hear with one who loves you so
But if you'd be willing to try
Say hello, don't say goodbye
Then maybe you'll find what you've been looking for
over here on my side of the door
What can I do that I haven't done already?
What can I say to make you stay forever more?
I only know that every part of me is wanting
you to be happy here on my side of the door
repeat chorus
