Story behind the song
A description of the trouble people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) has to go thru to be taken seriously about their disease.
Lyrics
You gotta be healthy to be ill
You wake up one morning and you’re feeling really bad
Your body’s full of aching; ev’rything is sad
You can’t get out of bed so you’re thinking yes indeed
I’ll think I’ll have a sick leave; that is what I need
But you don’t get any better; your illness lasts too long
You head on to your GP to find out what is wrong
But he just shakes his head, he doesn’t have a clue
He says “you’ll get well, you must have got the flu”
You complain to your GP, but he just says the same:
You’re worn out and you’re burned out, yes that’s the game
Go home; lie down and have a little rest
And then you’ll see; you won’t be so depressed
Oh Oh but can’t I get a rest
Oh Oh I’m way to much stressed
Oh oh But If I’m working real hard
So oh…. will my life be marred
I am feeling these pains in every single joint
My headaches soon has reached exploding point
My heart beats like a drummer in a rock and roll show
My legs are so cold but my head’s all on glow
And when I feel ok I try to tidy up
I work for 5 minutes before I have to stop
I try to make my bed so I can have a snooze
But when I am done I’ve blown my fuse
And then I go out for a night on the town
I try to look my best and I dress up so fine
My friends all say that they think I’m looking great
But when I’m home again I’m in a terrible state
Oh oh my brain is in a haze
Oh oh what did I just phrase?
Oh oh my shape is in the drains
Why-y…. do I feel these pains?
And all my friends say that I’ve gotta work out
They keep on telling me that’s what’s it about
Go to the gym and then you will see
You’ll be back on your feet in 1-2-3
My GP keep insisting on the same thing
You gotta work your body that’ll do the swing
So here’s an appointment at the local gym
After some hours you’ll be in perfect trim
Well I tried to work out, ‘cause the GP ordered that
But in a few minutes I was struck down flat
I had to stay in bed for a week; that was my score
And none of my friends came to see me anymore
Oh oh I don’t need exercise
Oh oh that was a bunch of lies
Oh oh when the symptoms are racing
I…. gotta do some pacing
And my GP is sure that he knows it all
It’s all in my head is his final call
But no matter what I try, I just keep getting worse
This illness has become an everlasting curse
So I changed GPs and this is what they said
“Rest and exercise will get you out of bed”
They don’t understand that that won’t do the trick
It will only make me worse; make me more sick
But finally I find one that seems to understand
A little bit of what I might have at hand
He explains to me with a serious voice
A full examination is our only chose
Oh oh will I get some clues
Oh oh to what’s causing these blues
Oh oh will my ordeals soon be ended
Will I... soon be mended
I thought a few blood samples were all that I should take
But I quickly realized; that was a big mistake
They searched my whole body; inside and out
These examinations made me wanna shout
They tested me for all diseases known to man
They turned me inside out and did some MR scan
They inspected, injected ev’ry part of me
And when I was done, I was a wreck, so totally.
My hormones were all messed up; it was all wracked
My whole immune system was being attacked
My doctor called me up, says they’ve figured out the plot
“M.E. is the verdict; that is what you’ve got”
Oh oh what the heck is M.E.?
Oh oh why did it happen to me?
Oh oh how can they be so sure?
Is there…. Any kind of cure?
There ain’t no cure is the first thing that I hear
To all of that I turn a deaf ear
I’m searching the internet till I’m climbing off the wall
To find that one and only “cure-it-all”
But hey my friends; I have never been a chump
And after all you see; my name’s not Donald Trump
So I start to ponder; and I start to wonder how
I could get some money; get me some more dough
For all kinds of healthy food that’ll get me ou
