Story behind the song

I had a friend I knew since 5th grade. Sometime in our early 40's my friend was forced to work too much and fell asleep on the way home. 
My friend died. 
I miss my friend. 
I couldn't write the song without making it sound sappy. Then another friend told me to turn my grief into a thought, and turn the thought into the subject of the song.. it worked. thanks Mike.
