Story behind the song
THIS IS A VERY ROUGH VERSION THAT SOUNDS BAD AND THE SECOND VERSE ISN'T QUITE RIGHT, BUT I'M NOT A ROCK SINGER, SO THIS IS MY BEST ATTEMPT FOR NOW!
The motivation of this song was a poll I saw on my Internet home page titled "Under God?" It was a poll asking ppl if we should have the words "under God" in our nation's pledge of allegiance or not. Something about that phrase "under God" clicked in my brain and the first verse came out and then the chorus. The second verse was harder and underwent several rewrites, but I think I got it to a place where I like it.
The song is about how in our daily lives we tend to put our own selves first and foremost, leaving God far down on the list or, as the song says, up on a shelf where He's collecting dust. This song is to lift Him higher because He needs to be first in our lives, both daily and totally. Lift up the praise! Many people think life is about the things you get (be it toys or money or men/women or whatever), but the one who thinks that way, no matter how much stuff he may have, is going to die. God IS real and He DOES love you; let Him into your life to make you new and you will be given the free gift of eternal life! "Raise the praise up through the roof!"
