Story behind the song
Sometimes there is doubt about the fairness of life. This was written during one of those times. Written in 1964 during a college humanities class.
Lyrics
Am6 Am5 Em2 Em A rose was born on a summer’s day A thorn appeared just a few feet away A wall was built between their love And the sun shown down on only one The other died missed by none Refrain: My mind cannot hide My soul cannot lie My body will never be there I wonder sometimes if it’s fairs A gentle doe in a field of corn Proud daddy buck antler adorned Their tender fawn in the grass was fed Beauty and love by an ounce of lead Was gutted and left dead Refrain: A pendulum swings and a shadow moves On down the path something hued Meanings are lost in the cloak of the night The meek will never fight and the proud never take flight Refrain: The love that we had was destined to be Night after night it grew harder to break free Predestined fate With a sweep of his hand Left me here to remain Till the hour glass sand Leads me out of this lonely land
