Story behind the song
I wrote this song to protest the Wisconsin D.O.T. decision to scrap an old steel bridge in my home town. It worked! This song is legendary!! I played the rhythm guitar part and Eric McFadden played the colorful guitar fills with Cat Braaten on back up vocals. Steve Hamilton recorded it in the Holiday Music Motel in Sturgeon Bay, WI right next to the very bridge we saved.
Lyrics
I am young and the boat moves slow
can't get through when it hangs so low
Tender man, keep that bridge open for me.
Bridge tender man, won't you keep that bridge open for me?
I don't know how I can make my true love stay.
Just keep my love on this side of the bay.
Tender man, keep that bridge open for me.
Bridge tender man, won't you keep that bridge open for me?
The wind will push us in if that black cloud don't strike us first.
The mass will hold us true if the spinnaker doesn't burst.
Tender man, keep that bridge open for me.
Bridge tender man, won't you keep that bridge open for me?
