Story behind the song
Our Place in the sun Taken from 'The Butterfly Island Story' - Chapter 2 / Scene 1: "Our Place in the sun": Here we find the Lover talking to Nancy, responding to her suggestion that they move in together and start building a new home and a new life. Nancy has finally decided to put prostitution behind her and have a monogamous relationship with the man whom she really loves and wants to be with. What starts out well however quickly deteriorates because they don't have firm foundations in their relationship to hold this together for very long. They try to build this new life simply on both of them working all hours to buy the things they want in a way to find true happiness and fulfilment. However, it is a 'false dawn' because their past lives are never far behind them. Nancy used to make a lot of money as a prostitute. Both she and her Lover soon discover that they can't easily make the same money. The song tells us about the "falling" as they slide into the prison of debt and the constant worry and depression that engulfs them as they try desperately to climb out of this financial hole. The message of the song is that true happiness and fullfillment comes from loving and being loved and that there is far more to life than simply chasing material wealth, which can so easily slip through our fingers. The strain on their relationship is seen as the story unfolds ...
Lyrics
My baby told me, “Let's make some money, Lets 'play house' together, Oh, I'll be your lady, I won't put up a fight And we will spend the rest of our lives in Heaven ..” In Heaven ? She takes my hand She's in the 'family mood' I said “Oh ! I'll be working after hours And you'll be singing the blues !” I get this feeling things will be all right If I work all day and you work all night I'll put my 'hand to the plough' Until the hard day's done Yes, we're working so hard For Our Place in the Sun. I heard your warning I started falling Down 'the never never' It could be forever – (oh) yeah ! Maybe I'm losing, maybe winning, Still I'm a sucker for 'Good Living' ! Then I heard my Baby singing, Those good ole' Sunday mornings Always blow her mind, She said “Oh ! Beyond the Jordan river Will we be forgiven ?” I hear your laughter My heart beats faster I work up a sweat Like there's a gun at my head, I said “Oh ! Well if you work for love and money, Keep your fingers in the honey !”
