This is the first of our arrangements of popular public domain hymns. We remixed and rewrote it for a service on the theme of "Stress", to be a plea for peace in the craziness of life!

Abbess was the composer in residence for the Visions creative multimedia collective and church service in York from 1991-2010. She then went to work for Leeds Minster before moving South to Winchester Cathedral. Now she is working for the Transcendence Trust. A few years ago she added some free downloads of settings of ancient songs used in the mornng prayer liturgy. Abbess' music ranges from classically influenced chill-out pieces through trip hop to departures into the land of techno. Feel free to use the mixes and/or words in a non-profit church service situation, and let her know if they liked it!

Story behind the song
This was one of our first experiments into the world of hymn re-writing; taking something old and familiar, and making something new and special out of it, through (sometimes quite radical!) remixing. We soon discovered how popular this was with our friends, and visitors to Visions too. They knew the tune and loved singing something familiar with a new twist to it. So as a result, over the past year we have been working on many more hymns.
Lyrics
Dear Father of the human race Come calm our troubled lives. Reclothe us in our rightful mind, In simpler lives Your service find With time to give You praise, With time to give You praise. Sweet holidays by Galilee The calming hills above Where Jesus shared on bended knee The silence of Eternity interpreted by love, Interpreted by love. Drop waterfalls of quietness Till all our strivings cease Take from our souls the strain and stress And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of your peace, The beauty of your peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Your coolness and your balm. Let sense be dumb, let stress retire Speak through the earthquake wind and fire O still small, voice of calm. O still small voice of calm.
