Story behind the song
This song has an amazing story behind it. (too long a story to tell here, but plenty of websites mention it) of how the cowherd Caedmon, who couldn't sing, miraculously found his voice, and became the first English poet. I've wanted to set the poem, ever since I saw it carved on a huge stone cross overlooking the town of Whitby. I tried to keep the sense of the original poem in my song, whilst translating it into modern English, and making it fit a tune easily. I thought it would be nice to include the original poem as a sample though, and needed a male Yorkshire voice to play Caedmon. Paul volunteered to do the sample for me and did a fantastic job!
Lyrics
Now must we praise The Guardian of Heaven's realm. The Creator's might, and his Mind's thought. The glorious works of the Father. How, of every wonder, He, the Lord Eternal, laid the foundation. He shaped erst for the son's of men. Heaven as their roof. Holy Creator. The Middle World, he,mankind's guardian, Eternal Lord) Afterwards prepared the Earth for men. Lord almighty. How shall we praise The guardian of Heaven bright? How can we sing Of our makers might? The thoughts of our God Our Father's artistic mind The wonder of life Our Creator kind. Foundations of earth He shaped from the very first For children to dance By heaven's expanse A shelter of stars With space as our canopy Creator divine Our guardian through time The centre of Earth He made as a garden green Nurtured, prepared For humans to share Creator divine With love in your sacred mind Your hands worked to build A wonderful world.
