Story behind the song
This is about self reflection. In John chapter 8 Jesus confronts a group of religious leaders who out of envy accuse him of wrongdoing. He makes a statement they consider blasphemous: "before Abraham was I AM". They pick up stones to stone him, but he slips away. Later in the book of Acts the same group stones the martyr Stephen. Do we ever behave this way today? Accusing others when we should be looking at ourselves?
Lyrics
Don’t Wanna Be a Pharisee Verse 1 Jesus faced the teachers Saw the anger in their features said they, “We’re sons of Abraham” But we think you ‘ve have a demon The Master lifted up his hand: (said) “I knew this Abraham. He was glad to see my time And before he was I AM.” Chorus: They picked up stones to stone him Just like the ones that came before him They killed the prophets that he sent them with hearts like the arctic zone. Envy masked as morality Pointing fingers place the blame, Accusing Him they had not known And still today we are the same - If you don’t want to be a Pharisee Don’t pick up a stone. Verse 2 They did the same to Stephen As he stood before them preaching As he tried to make them listen And he told them of their sin As the stones rained down upon him He looked up and he saw Jesus Then he prayed and he forgave them As he bowed his head and died Repeat Chorus- Bridge: O Lord I pray I’ll see more clearly Let my own faults be revealed I don’t want to be a Pharisee (5x) so I’ll not pick up a stone Ending: I won’t pick up a stone I won’t pick up a stone I won’t pick up a stone
