Story behind the song
We don't know what miasma lurks behind the mystery of Ed and Cyrus' song. We were glad to get ahold of them recently to invite them to hear us and then play this song for them 20 years later. It was a real privilege.
Lyrics
BLACK FLAG (Ed Lundell & Cyrus Crafft) Ambition has made me brave I've only one life to spend And there's a vessel beyond those waves We'll be embarking near Land's End Maybe you'd like to go Maybe you just don't care But if your girlfriend runs off with Quasimodo You'll want to meet us there We'll go bellowing across the seas With a black flag against the breeze We'll bring the native man to his knees We'll talk about the things to come White magic and the twisted tongue So carefully our time was spent For never have we seen a more significant event I think that everyone's in We might as well lock the door It's late and we should begin No organs, no pleats, no pores The trouble with all you do Is you remind us of what you told to us You let your science through You keep inflating, you keep on scolding us We'll go barrelling across the skies With a dirty light in our eyes We'll follow where the eagle flies We'll talk about the things to come And the slaughter of the rising sun The center of the earth will shake For never have we made a more serious mistake! If you stand with your eyes just right The humid mirage defines A system of pointless rights Fluttering between the lines Why did you let those holes Install their ferocious kings We don't like the way you hand out halos The way that your words make things We go scurrying across the sands With a holy book in our hands All the prophets of the ancient lands Talk about the things to come The murder of the righteous one So we'll sacrifice the sacred saint For never have we heard a more furious complaint You're vicious but not too brave Only one life to spend So why should you be a slave To something you'd never do again If you had the choice Your conscience is so unfair And if your boyfriend turns into Quasimodo You'll want to meet us there
